Short-form drama platform app, Lezhin Snack, released the first teaser video and poster for its live-action adaptation of its popular BL, Painter of the Night. The historic BL series from author Byeonduck will premiere on May 28 at 5PM KST. Longtime fans will be excited to see characters Nakyum Baek and Seungho Yoon by Min Seo Ji and Kang Jae Kim, respectively. Director Bo Kyung Choi previously co-directed The Divorce Insurance. Originally launched in 2019 on Lezhin Comics, the mature BL webtoon has been adored by fans all over Asia and overseas. According to an earlier report, filming for the drama has wrapped up and was in post-production as of last month.
Ahead of its release on the 28th, Lezhin is dropping little teasers throughout the month of May.
Considering Lezhin Snack app is rated for teens on both the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store, it’s likely the original adult material will be toned down to fit local regulations. The Joseon era story follows a lowborn erotic artist, Nakyum, and the nobleman, Seungho, who is captivated his paintings. Painter of the Night has been lauded as one of Lezhin Comic’s flagship titles, remaining in the #1 spot for several years during its weekly run. Even now, the webtoon continues to see success through print runs in Korea, Taiwan, Japan, and the US through Seven Seas. In fact, it was such a hit that Lezhin Comics collaborated with famed Korean singer, Ahn Ye-eun, to create the widely beloved song, “Night Flower,” for the comics’ third season.
Lezhin Entertainment launched Lezhin Snack earlier this year to distrbute adaptations of popular webtoon franchises from both Lezhin Comics and Bomtoon, along with other short-form original titles. The platform is leaning the popularity of mini dramas spanning a variety of genres: romance, comedy, and BL/GL. Since last year, the company has been unveiling projects that expand on its popular IP series, including the formation of a music project involving characters from different webtoons called SPAKLZ.
