Co-CEO Ted Sarandos of the streaming platform Netflix hinted at the company’s plans for the expected 2029 sequel of KPop Demon Hunters, noting a “big, broad, global” theatrical release for the film. The original KPop Demon Hunters film had a singalong version that debuted in theaters two months after the release on Netflix in June of 2025, grossing over an estimated $19 million in the span of two days, and then an additional theatrical singalong debut running from October 31st to November 2nd.
KPop Demon Hunters has been a monumental success for the streaming service. On top of toy sales and collaborations, the movie spent 63 consecutive weeks in the Netflix Global Top 10 and achieved an overwhelming 325.1 million views in the first 90 days on the platform. Alongside those achievements, the film has multiple award wins under its belt, including Best Animated Feature at the 31st Critics Choice Awards, the 83rd Golden Globe Awards, and the 98th Academy Awards. The film’s song “Golden” also won Best Original Song at the Critics Choice Awards, the Golden Globes, the Academy Awards, and a Grammy for Best Song Written For Visual Media.
While pulling incredible numbers by any metric, KPop Demon Hunters is also a film that takes home a personal win for the South Korean community. Director Maggi Kang gave thanks during her acceptance speech at the 2026 Oscars, stating that the film was for “Korea and Koreans everywhere” and that “the next generations don’t have to go longing.”
Kang was the first South Korean filmmaker to win an Oscar. Additionally, the film sparked an increase of interest in South Korean culture and media. While there will be a bit of a wait before fans can see Rumi, Zoey and Mira continuing to balance being international pop sensations with hunting demons, the sequel is sure to be another scintillating and show stopping watch for all to enjoy.
