Monthly Manhwa Recs #7
Monthly Manhwa Recs #7: Surviving as a Tyrant’s Daughter

Surviving as Tyrant’s DaughterSurviving as a Tyrant’s Daughter—okay, this isn’t technically a manhwa. It’s a manhua (a Chinese comic), but since it’s a VSC comic hosted on Pocket Comics, I think there’s some wiggle room for me to recommend it. Right?

Surviving as a Tyrant’s Daughter follows Yeyul, the youngest princess, who lives in fear and endures neglect from her father. However, when a reincarnated soul takes over her body, she uses her knowledge of the story’s future to change Yeyul’s fate.

I love period comics, especially those set in ancient China or inspired by it, so naturally, Surviving as a Tyrant’s Daughter caught my eye. The artwork helps too. It’s absolutely lovely. And Yeyul? She’s such a cutie pie! Although the episodes are short and sometimes feel a bit disjointed, I’m too invested to stop reading. I need to uncover the secrets behind the Sixth Prince and find out how his relationship with Yeyul develops.

\It’s also been fascinating to watch Yeyul win over people who once disliked her, including her tyrant father and older sister.

Written by Wulichouchou/China Literature, illustrated by LibertyHome, and originally published by Kuaikan, Surviving as a Tyrant’s Daughter is available to read on Pocket Comics with 173 episodes so far. The series is currently ongoing. ⸺ HK

Monthly Manhwa Recs #7: Monochrome Diary

Monochrome Diary ⸺ High school years can seem equally the most ecstatic and mundane time in one’s life. You’re swamped with exams, supposed to decide on the course of your career, you’re angry at the world, and most importantly, you fall in love. Yoojoon isn’t as concerned about his grades. But falling head over heels for the gorgeous (and infamous) Jiho in his grade who’s so out of his league might become a thorn in his side. Jiho is so hard to read and impossible to predict, but what else can Yoojoon do besides hanging on his every word and reading into his tiniest of actions?

Monochrome Diary tells the story of the transfer student Yoojoon, whose life is suddenly recentered around a schoolmate who decided to say hello to him on a whim. He’s as surprised by the way he cats around Jiho as the confused guy himself, but a young boy in love, it seems, can be as unpredictable. The series is a recent addition to Tappytoon’s library so currently, there are only a handful of chapters. Though the story feels as if it’s on full throttle.

Ask people who know Jiho, and you’ll hear a different, equally ludicrous rumor regarding his personal life. The reality is, no one knows the truth, where he is, or what he’s up to—they don’t even have his contact info. Despite the first impression the series gives, Yoojoon is not the angel, here to heal Jiho from the hurt. He’s, in some ways, as unhinged as Jiho. Let’s just say he matches Jiho’s freak.

If the character designs feel familiar to you but you can’t seem to put your finger on it, prepare to be surprised! This series is by REAK, no other than the creator behind Hate Mate and Merry Go Round. The transformation in their art style, especially the way they color and outline, has changed a lot. But it’s lovely how you can still see the resemblance in the character designs. If you’re up for a ride, and a bumpy and wild one at that, this is your sign to start reading Monochrome Diary! ⸺ MG

Monthly Manhwa Recs #7: The Mafia Nanny

The Mafia Nanny ⸺ Following the steps of her own nanny Bremerton, Davina trains hard to become an elite nanny herself, swearing to protect the kids she’s entrusted with no matter what it takes. Soon after she graduates, her services specifically are sought after by the Venetian underboss Gabriel Angelini. Davina is as stunned as Bremerton as to why it has to be her, but the second she’s the caretaker of his son Mickey, all of this becomes secondary. She’s the cream of the top, the best of the best, no compromises there. But how will she fare in upholding one of the most important codes of being a nanny and keeping herself from catching feelings of any kind? That, you’ll have to read and see.

It was on an unexpectedly gloomy Sunday in the month of June when I decided to give The Mafia Nanny a go. I knew about its existence and popularity, that it was loved by the fans so much it was getting a print release. And when I tell you, my brain was hijacked.

It’s an action-packed, laugh-out-loud funny, and addictive romance series that, after reading, I understand why it’s considered suitable for fans of Spy x Family. The series really hook you in with lively characters with eye-catching (and at times, worthy of drooling over) designs and manages to get you to care about them! I’m glad I got into The Mafia Nanny right after the series’ return for season 2, to be honest. So it’s certainly the perfect time for you to invest in this entertaining romance series available to read digitally on WEBTOON! ⸺ MG
