We’re witnessing history—and it’s being made by two fictional K-Pop groups (said affectionately, because I definitely contributed to those Spotify numbers).
KPop Demon Hunters’ groups, Saja Boys and Huntrix, just became the highest-charting K-Pop acts in U.S. Spotify history. Saja Boys, in particular, now hold the title as the first male K-Pop group to reach #1, surpassing BTS, with their hit “Your Idol.” Meanwhile, Huntrix took the #2 spot with “Golden,” passing BLACKPINK.
(It’s slightly ironic that a song about a group of demon boy band members seducing you into obsession so they can prison-break a demon lord is now the top song in the U.S.—but we digress.)
The two songs have also landed on Billboard Hot 100 with the Saja Boys at No. 77 and Huntrix at No. 81 with their respective songs. This also became Andrew Choi, Neckwav, Danny Chung, Kevin Woo, SamUIL Lee, EJAE, Eudrey Nuna, and Rei Ami’s, who provided the singing vocals for the KPop stars, first Billboard entries. The album even landed on No. 8 on the Billboard 200 chart and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Soundtracks chart. Since the film’s release, all of the songs have been charting on music charts.
Created from Maggie Kang’s desire to spotlight Korean culture, the film debuted at No. 1 on Netflix’s U.S. chart and shows no signs of slowing. Kang and Chris Appelhans co-directed the film and co-wrote the screenplay with Danya Jimenez and Hannah McMechan. The story follows what appears to be a K-Pop rivalry between Huntrix and the Saja Boys as they battle for the crown at the Idol Awards—but underneath the glitz lies a war between demon hunters and demons. To protect the world from evil, the hunters must create a mystical barrier called the Honmoon.
