Netflix may have scored its first-ever No. 1 box-office hit with KPop Demon Hunters. The animated musical sensation, which debuted on the streamer in June, hit 1,750 theaters this weekend for special sing-along screenings—and pulled in an estimated $16–18 million.
The two-day event gave fans a chance to belt out the film’s catchy soundtrack while watching Huntr/x, a K-Pop trio who moonlight as demon hunters, battle a rival boy band of demons in disguise. Some industry insiders suggest the film’s haul could be closer to $20 million, a striking feat for a limited release.
While AMC theaters declined to participate, the movie still managed to outpace competitors, edging out horror hit Weapons ($15.6 million) and Disney’s Freakier Friday ($9.2 million).
Originally developed by Sony before being sold to Netflix, KPop Demon Hunters has become the platform’s most-watched animated original and one of the summer’s breakout successes. Its theatrical sing-along screenings cement the film as not only a streaming juggernaut but now a box-office champ.
