Behold: Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji reunite under the moonlight in Seven Seas’ first danmei hardcover.
Seven Seas Entertainment has unveiled the cover for the deluxe hardcover edition of Mo Dao Zu Shi: Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation Volume 1—the publisher’s first danmei series. While the design echoes the paperback version, it introduces striking new elements: Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji appear on the front once again, but this time, three birds circle a luminous full moon above them, visually marking their reunion after 13 years apart. (Spoiler alert, but not really: Wei Wuxian was dead during that time.)
Artist Ruthie, known for her work on Legend of Exorcism, designed and illustrated the dust jacket, hardcover, painted edges, and endpaper. The hardcover showcases the cloud motif of the Gusu Lan Sect and features the series’ infamous opening line: “Rejoice, Wei Wuxian is dead!” The endpaper captures a poignant scene—Wei Wuxian standing atop a hill, gazing down at Lan Wangji as he ascends the steps below. Seven Seas noted that the hardcover will include the most up-to-date version of the paperback text, incorporating corrections to previous errata and typos. Most of these fixes already appear in newer paperback reprints. Interior black-and-white art is provided by Marina Privalova, with color illustrations by moo.
The original paperback cover depicted a younger Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji during their teenage years, with the latter catching the former sneaking alcohol back into Cloud Recesses.
Originally written by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu, Mo Dao Zu Shi: Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation debuted in paperback on December 14, 2021. The story shifts between present-day events and memories from 13 years earlier, following the rise, fall, and resurrection of Wei Wuxian—a once-promising cultivator who falls into infamy after embracing demonic cultivation. After dying in disgrace, he awakens in the body of a tormented soul who offers himself up for revenge. During this second chance at life, Wei Wuxian reunites with Lan Wangji, his former rival from their youth. But this time, Lan Wangji seems… different.
