The original demo of “Your Idol” reveals EJAE’s unexpected inspiration

Can you imagine "Your Idol" as "Black Hats"?

The original demo of the Saja Boys’ viral hit “Your Idol” has been released, featuring EJAE’s vocals. Initially titled “Black Hats,” the track took a different turn during recording. While laying down toplines, EJAE—the voice of Rumi in KPop Demon Hunters—improvised the lyric “your idol,” which ultimately inspired the song’s shift toward exploring the darker side of the idol industry.

Since its release in Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters, “Your Idol” has become a global sensation. In July, the Saja Boys made history as the highest-charting K-pop act on U.S. Spotify, surpassing BTS alongside HUNTR/X with the very same track. That month, the song also debuted on the Billboard Hot 100, ranking four spots higher than “Golden.” Its impact has spread even further, with Haunted Hotel’s Abbadon releasing a viral cover of the hit.

While the song likely would have succeeded under its original name, “Black Hats,” it’s clear that EJAE’s creative instinct to lean into the haunting line elevated it into something unforgettable.
