Ahn Hyoseop is set “FREE” in cover for KPOP DEMON HUNTERS

Why is this looping for 10 hours straight?

We’re staying very calm (and absolutely not going feral) when we ask—okay, demand—this: we need a full version of this cover. And while we’re at it, can all the voice actors just go ahead and record full versions of the songs too?!

Ahn Hyoseop, who voices Jinu—the charismatic yet tortured leader of the Saja Boys in the animated movie KPop Demon Hunters—blessed fans with a short cover of “Free,” a duet between his character and Rumi (voiced by Arden Cho). EJAE and Andrew Choi sang the original version in the film. As of July 1, “Free” hit a new peak at #23 on the Global Spotify Chart with 2.5 million streams.

Ahn isn’t new to singing. He trained under JYP Entertainment for three years—yes, he even shared a dorm with the GOT7 boys—before moving to Starhaus Entertainment. He debuted in 2015 as part of a project group called One O One, which disbanded in 2019. That same year, he started acting with a supporting role in Splash Splash Love, and has since taken on lead roles in hits like Dr. Romantic Season 2 (which earned him Best New Actor at the Baeksang Arts Awards), Lovers of the Red Sky (Excellence Award at the SBS Drama Awards), and Business Proposal, based on the popular webtoon. He even sang the OST “Thank You for the Memories” for Dr. Romantic. Up next: he’ll play Kim Dokja in the film adaptation of Omniscient Reader.

Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, KPop Demon Hunters hit Netflix on June 20 and quickly became one of the platform’s top movies. Born from Kang’s desire to celebrate Korean culture, the fantasy musical tells the story of Huntrix—a trio of girls who use their voices to protect humans from demons. In this generation, the girls—Rumi, Zoey, and Mira—work to create the fabled Golden Honmoon. But naturally, chaos arrives in the form of a rising K-pop boy band, the Saja Boys, who also happen to be demons in disguise.

The film’s soundtrack has taken off, racking up Spotify streams and charting across the board. It recently debuted at #8 on the Billboard 200 and snagged the #1 spot on the Billboard Soundtracks chart—and shows no signs of slowing down.

KPop Demon Hunters is now streaming on Netflix.
