Singer-songwriter EJAE, best known as the voice and composer behind KPop Demon Hunters’ breakout song “Golden,” recently opened up about the challenges of performing her own hit live.
During her guest appearance on KBS Cool FM’s Lee Eun-ji’s Gayo Plaza, EJAE confessed that she didn’t anticipate how demanding the track would be when she originally wrote it for the film’s animated heroine, Rumi—a member of the fictional girl group Huntrix.
“Of course there’s pressure,” she said. “It’s an animation, and the story behind the character was more important. If I had written it for real singers, I would have made it differently.”
EJAE explained that “Golden”’s soaring high notes were intentionally composed to capture Rumi’s emotional intensity in the movie. “It needed that desperate climb in tone to express her feelings,” she shared. “I didn’t expect I’d end up performing it live myself. Rumi felt the pressure—and so do I.”
Despite its vocal challenges, “Golden” became a global sensation, topping the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 for seven consecutive weeks and solidifying KPop Demon Hunters as one of 2025’s biggest animated hits.
EJAE recently showcased her powerhouse vocals on NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where her live rendition of “Golden” drew praise for its cinematic scope and emotional delivery.
With KPop Demon Hunters continuing to dominate playlists and streaming charts, fans can only imagine what musical heights EJAE will conquer next—even if they’re a little high to reach.
