EJAE, the singing voice behind Rumi, the lead vocalist of HUNTR/X in KPop Demon Hunters, revealed which song challenged her the most—both emotionally and physically.
In an interview with Jacki Jing, EJAE shared, “‘Golden’ is a hard song. It really is a hard song. Because it’s also incredibly emotional. When I was recording the demo, I actually cried while laughing because I was going through a tough time. The bridge especially was difficult to sing because I related so much to the character, and I’ve known her for so long. That made it even harder.”
Jing responded, “You can feel your heart in that song. That’s one thing I know for sure. I cry when I sing it. I can only imagine what it was like for you.”
EJAE previously explained that she wrote “Golden” on her way to the dentist. When she shared her ideas with the film’s composer, Mark Sonnenblick, they collaborated to turn it into what she called a “banger.” She also noted how the song reflects Rumi’s struggles. While Rumi often hides her flaws, “Golden” carries a message of perseverance, acceptance, and self-love.
KPop Demon Hunters is Netflix’s hit summer film about HUNTR/X, a girl group who live double lives as K-Pop idols by day and demon hunters by night. The movie is now streaming on Netflix.
