EJAE, the singing voice of Rumi from the hit Netflix film KPop Demon Hunters, recently shared the story behind the creation of the movie’s breakout song, “Golden.”

In an interview with Good Morning America, EJAE revealed that she first received the instrumental track while on her way to the dentist. She hummed the melody into her phone, recording it on the go, before slowly adding lyrics. Eventually, she brought her ideas to Mark Sonnenblick, the film’s composer, who felt something, and together they refined the song. Reflecting on the finished product, EJAE described it as “kind of a banger,” expressing pride in the work they created.

EJAE also discussed Rumi’s character, noting that she often hides herself. She reflected on how pushing through challenges and persevering can sometimes become toxic if one suppresses insecurities. According to EJAE, “‘Golden’ is a beautiful message of ‘keep going, keep going,’ but also of accepting your flaws and fully embracing who you are in order to persevere.”

She additionally spoke about the film’s success and the pride it brings her as a Korean American. “This is like the first big-budget animated film based in Korea. That means the world, because I wish I saw this growing up. People didn’t even know where South Korea was. I’ve always been asked the question, ‘Are you from North or South Korea?’ I’m just so proud that I get to be a part of this,” she said.

KPop Demon Hunters follows girl group HUNTR/X, who must balance their music careers with their secret mission to hunt and defeat supernatural threats. Action, humor, and heart collide in this thrilling, music-driven adventure that proves heroism can come in the most unexpected forms.

KPop Demon Hunters is streaming on Netflix.
