KPOP DEMON HUNTERS wins two historical Oscars

Netflix and Sony Animation's film took the Oscar in two categories

-

Following up on its continual wins, KPop Demon Hunters closes out awards season with an Oscar for Best Animated Film and Best Original Song. The movie has been collecting accolade after accolade during this season as it scored two Golden Globes, and won a Grammy, becoming the first K-pop song to win at the award show. Netflix officially announced a sequel to the movie earlier this week.

During the Oscars, EJAE, Rei Ami and Audrey Nuna took over the show with a dazzling production of “Golden.” As another first for some in the audience, Huntr/x lightsticks were waved back and forth, a ritual familiar to those who attend K-pop concerts. Shortly after, EJAE would return to the stage to pick up the trophy for Best Original Song.

KPop Demon Hunters‘s producer Michelle LM Wong and it directors, Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, would later accept the award for Best Animated Feature Film. In a tearful speech, co-director Kang celebrated her win. “For those of you who look like me, I’m so sorry that it took us so long to see us in a movie like this…This is for Korea and for Koreans everywhere.”
