LOST IN STARLIGHT: romance transcends space in new animated film

Buckle up—Lost in Starlight is ready to launch hearts (and tears) into orbit.

Netflix has dropped the first trailer for Lost in Starlight, its first Korean original animated film, and it promises an emotional cosmic journey. Set in a futuristic Korea in the year 2050, the story follows Nayoung, an astronaut preparing for a mission to Mars, and Jay, a musician who repairs retro instruments. Their chance encounter—both literal and metaphorical—sends their worlds spiraling as they fall for each other despite the looming distance. The trailer highlights romantic beats, bittersweet tension, and striking depictions of Seoul landmarks like Sewoon Plaza and the submersible bridge. Kim Tae Ri (Twenty-Five Twenty-One) voices Nayoung, while Hong Kyung (Weak Hero Class 1) lends his voice to Jay.

With the tagline “Never forget. Somewhere in this universe, there is someone always supporting you,” Lost in Starlight promises to pull at heartstrings, weaving themes of love, distance, and familial bonds into a cosmic love story. Acclaimed director Bong Joon Ho (Parasite) praised the film as “a visual masterpiece [that will] take you around the universe.”

A newly released visual poster adds to the emotion, showing Nayoung and Jay sitting close together on a giant vinyl record player—possibly the same one Nayoung’s mother brings to Jay in hopes he can repair it—beneath a dreamy sky of pink and blue.

Directed by Han Ji-won, known for the queer coming-of-age short The Summer, Lost in Starlight is produced by Climax Studio and Red Dog Culture House. Han made her feature debut in 2015 with the animated anthology Clearer Than You Think, and Lost in Starlight marks her return to the director’s chair after a decade.

Lost in Starlight lands on Netflix on May 30.
