Winners of the 2024 World Webtoon Awards were announced this month. Ten titles were included, as selected by a panel of judges, and overseen by the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA). Webtoons were judged on the basis of story, art, work performance, development and expansion. The top ten titles are pretty much a “greatest hits” of webtoons.
The winners, presented alphabetically (and with rough Google translate approximations of the titles, so I’m sorry if I missed some subtleties).
Garbage Time by 2Sazang: the tale of a losing basketball team
Solo Leveling by Studio Redice: The international hit fantasy
To help you understand by Lanyon and Ocean. An adaptation of a popular romantasy webnovel.
The Great by Gwangjin and Jimin: A realistic drama about a modern woman.
The Boxer by Jeong Ji-hoon: the struggles of an up and coming boxer. This is currently featured on WEBTOON, and is available in print from Ize Press.
Married Woman Killer by YOON and black. Mom by day….assassin by night.
The Remarried Empress by Alphatart and Sumpul: When her emperor husband jilts her, the empress marries….another emperor! Available in English and in print from Ize Press
Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint by Umi and SleepyC: Another international blockbuster, based on the webnovel. An ordinary worker is the only person who knows how to stave off the apocalypse. Available in print from Ize Press.
Hellbound by Yeon Sang-ho and Choi Gyu-seok: Another international hit, as a webtoon, and then a horror series, currently available on Netflix. Also in print from Dark Horse.

In addition three special awards were presented:
Best New Comic: Unemployed Gyebaeksoon by Zival by Delayed Action. Jobless adventures and humor.
Overseas Award: Tomahawk Angel by Odysseas Theodoratos a.k.a. Mangaka Ody: A webtoon from the US published on Tapas about an 18 year-old amnesiac woman who wakes up to a desperate world overrun by monsters. Print editions are available from Dark Horse.
“Experimental Award”: Tastes of Horror: Ghost Story Feast by Story Plus and TOH Crew: An anthology of horror tales.
The jury included Chairman Lee Hyun-se, a much respected Korean cartoonist and educator, and judges Kim Sung-jae, Kim So-won, Kim Jeong-tae, Park Ki-bong, Seo Hyeon-cheol, Yoon Nam-seon, Lee Jae-min, Choi Yun-seok and Ha Yoon-jeong.
An awards ceremony will be held September 26 in Seongsu-dong, Seoul as part of the World Webtoon Festival.

I wanted to kindly bring to your attention that there seems to be a slight error in the translation of the title and author for Best New Comic. It would be more accurate to write it as ‘Unemployed Gyebaeksoon by Zival’.
