WEBTOON pushes to expand indie creators’ reach on CANVAS; introduces AI-powered translation program

The new CANVAS features are entirely opt-in and won't train on creator art.

WEBTOON is making a significant push to expand indie creators’ reach on its CANVAS platform. The company announced a unified version of the creator-driven platform alongside an AI-powered Translation Program that will distribute series across seven languages — English, Spanish, French, Indonesian, Thai, Traditional Chinese, and German. You’ll notice, however, that Korean and Japanese-language content isn’t included in the expanded distribution services at this time, as both regions operate on separate platforms.

“WEBTOON CANVAS has always been a place where ideas become stories, fandoms, and careers,” said Yongsoo Kim, President of WEBTOON Entertainment. “Great stories can come from anywhere, and with the new CANVAS, we’re making it easier than ever for Creators to share those stories with fans everywhere. Our unified international CANVAS platform lets Creators reach a wider audience and nurture fan communities on a global stage. By unifying CANVAS services and giving Creators more control of where they localize, distribute, and monetize their content, we’re creating more ways for WEBTOON Creators to build a global audience and make money.”

New CANVAS features are opt-in 

The opt-in program is designed to connect indie creators with audiences they previously lacked the resources to reach. Combined with other new CANVAS features, the initiative aims to grow readership and boost revenue potential while preserving creators’ autonomy over their work.

Beyond breaking down language barriers, the CANVAS upgrade brings a range of quality-of-life improvements for both creators and readers. A new Creator Dashboard will centralize series insights, analytics, and engagement management tools, while ad revenue is being expanded to all supported CANVAS languages. On the reader side, discovery and homepage features are getting an overhaul, including personalized recommendations based on viewing history and preferred languages.

The AI-powered Translation Program itself will roll out as an opt-in beta starting Spring 2026, initially allowing English-language creators to translate their work into the platform’s supported languages, with broader availability to follow.

What’s new for CANVAS creators and users, according to WEBTOON’s PR:

  • Creator-controlled global distribution. In the most significant update, an opt-in beta Translation Program will allow creators to choose where and how their series is localized and distributed across seven supported languages — English, Spanish, French, Indonesian, Thai, Traditional Chinese, and German — helping them reach international audiences, expand earning potential, and maintain full control of their work. The Translation Program will begin rolling out in beta in Spring 2026 to eligible English-language CANVAS Creators before expanding to additional markets later this year.
  • More ways to make money. WEBTOON is expanding access to Ad Revenue Share monetization programs across all supported CANVAS languages.
  • Clearer insights into series performance. A new Creator Dashboard will give Creators deeper analytics, helping them understand readership, performance, and fan engagement in one place.
  • A refreshed CANVAS homepage. Readers will be connected to stories they’ll love from international creators with improved discovery and personalized recommendations.

These upgrades reflect a clear focus on creator needs, addressing a gap in infrastructure that previously made crossing language barriers at this scale impossible. Notably, the AI-powered Translation Program is built around translating text from creators’ series rather than generating new content — and WEBTOON has clarified that the visual data from comics will not be used to train AI on creators’ artwork.

Creators will be able to provide a glossary and relevant story context to help fine-tune translations across the seven supported languages. The program is also backed by a dedicated team of human moderators, positioning it as a tool for indie creators to reach audiences well beyond what was previously within their grasp, entirely on their own terms.

WEBTOON is aware of the sensitivities surrounding AI

WEBTOON appears well aware of the sensitivities surrounding AI, taking care to frame the Translation Program as a strictly optional distribution tool (similiar to Google Translate) with a defined scope that stops short of displacing human workers – a point that WEBTOON is clearly emphasizing with this roll out, telling KCB that no in-house human translators or localizers will be replaced with the new technology. While professional human translators would naturally be the ideal, that option remains financially impossible for most independent creators, making this program a compelling alternative for those who simply want their stories in front of a wider audience.

While Japan and Korea are not included in the rollout, the Japan Cartoonists Association and the Korean Cartoonist Association are actively weighing AI implementation in translation, with discussions, as reported by Anime News Network, emphasizing its potential as a workflow tool rather than a creative replacement. This suggests broader CANVAS availability may be on the horizon, alongside continued discussion of its boundaries.

That conversation matters. 

Creator anxiety around AI is well-founded, given the prevalence of generative “AI slop” and image scraping, and the fear of having one’s work exploited without consent is legitimate (here, it’s important to re-emphasize that WEBTOON’s AI translation program doesn’t train on creator art). Furthermore, WEBTOON does carry some credibility here, as the first Korean-founded company and webcomic platform to join the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (ACE), it has staked out a position against piracy that comes with real accountability. An AI feature designed to amplify creators rather than extract from them is a meaningfully different proposition than something like the recently scrapped Disney-OpenAI deal, which drew far more justified skepticism.

For English-speaking creators, the appeal is hard to dismiss — particularly given the scale and enthusiasm of audiences in participating markets. Ultimately, though, WEBTOON is framing the CANVAS Translation Program as exactly that: a choice, not a mandate.
