Netflix’s global sensation KPop Demon Hunters may have conquered the world with its mix of K-Pop thrills and demon-slaying action, but director Maggie Kang hinted at exciting possibilities for a sequel during an event in Seoul on August 22.
Reflecting on the unprecedented success of the animated musical—which has racked up over 210 million views worldwide and placed eight songs on the Billboard Hot 100, including the chart-topping “Golden”—Kang expressed her surprise at the fan response.
“We never imagined this kind of love,” Kang said in Korean.
Kang teased that future installments could explore music beyond the K-Pop genre. “Trot is huge right now… maybe some heavy metal, who knows?” she said, referencing Korea’s retro pop style beloved by older generations. Fans can expect the sequel to continue blending high-energy performances with storytelling steeped in Korean culture, just as the first film did.
KPop Demon Hunters follows the K-Pop girl group HUNTR/X, whose soaring vocals mask their secret mission: protecting the Honmoon, a barrier between Earth and a demon realm. When demon lord Gwi-ma launches a rival boy band to siphon their fans’ energy, humanity’s survival literally becomes a popularity contest.
Kang, a Korean Canadian making her directorial debut, emphasized authenticity as central to the film’s appeal. Drawing on her bicultural background and a team of Korean creators, she carefully incorporated cultural details—from public bathhouse rituals to local street quirks—ensuring the story resonated with both domestic and international audiences.
Though the sequel is still in the idea stage, Kang promises to explore untold backstories and new musical directions while staying true to the film’s themes of identity, acceptance, and the universal desire for love and security.
