PEERLESS celebrates with final volume cover reveal

We must soon bid farewell to another beloved danmei series by Meng Xi Shi.

Peerless is nearing its end, with Volume 5 set to conclude the series in just a few short months. In anticipation, Seven Seas Entertainment—the leading North American publisher of English-translated danmei—has unveiled the official cover for the final volume. As with the previous installments, the cover features main characters Feng Xiao and Cui Buqu, this time locked in a tender embrace as elegant ribbons swirl around them.

Peerless takes place in the same universe as Meng Xi Shi’s Thousand Autumns, which also sees publication through Seven Seas. In fact, Thousand Autumns acts as a sort of prequel to Peerless. The series debuted in English on July 30, 2024, with a translation by Faelicy and cover and interior illustrations by Me.Mimo.

Poison and Peril in the Capital

Cui Buqu and Feng Xiao have thwarted the corrupt officials embezzling grain in Guangqian County, but the Thirteen Floors of Yunhai and their elusive leader, Xiao Lü, remain at large. As Feng Xiao recovers from the battle, he finds his relationship with Cui Buqu on new footing—though Cui Buqu will be last to admit it.

Yet on their way back to the capital, a strange new case leaves them both at a loss: The entire household of a villa has been brutally massacred, and there’s no sign of the murderer. The only traces they find point to an arcane poison—one that, if deployed in the Sui capital, could put the empire itself at risk. Yet time is running out for Cui Buqu, whose precarious health continues to deteriorate. To get to the bottom of this final case, he must put his very life on the line in the investigative duo’s greatest trial yet.

When an envoy is ambushed and killed during an excursion—leaving no survivors and a missing jade piece—Feng Xiao, deputy chief of the Jiejian Bureau (the Emperor of Sui’s secret intelligence agency), is tasked with solving the case. But he isn’t the only one investigating: Cui Buqu of the rival Zuoyue Bureau is on the trail as well. Unable to crack the mystery alone, the two find themselves reluctantly working together.

Volume 5 will not receive a special edition release and will therefore have no merch inclusions. It’s currently unknown whether any extras—such as illustrations—will be included, as was the case with the final volume of Stars of Chaos: Sha Po Lang.

Peerless Vol. 5 releases on October 21.
