We’ve had a webtoon and a live-action adaptation, and soon, we’ll see Pyramid Game as an animated series.
Streaming platform LAFTEL recently released a short teaser for its next animation project. Like the Red Fox adaptation, the Pyramid Game teaser starts with a motion comic style before shifting into more dynamic animation. It begins with a chalkboard drawing of the student hierarchy, where “F” marks the lowest rank. The girls turn toward the outcast in eerie unison, their shadows looming, setting a chilling tone that fits the thriller genre perfectly.
Created by Dalgonyak, Pyramid Game is set at Love High School. On a seemingly random Thursday, Seong Suji transfers into Class 2-5 and quickly makes a positive impression. But the day isn’t as ordinary as it appears. On the last Thursday of every month, students vote to rank each other in a pyramid system: “A” ranks at the top, “F” at the bottom. Those who fall to the lowest rank face relentless bullying. When Suji receives zero votes and lands at “F,” she must decide—will she climb her way to the top, or bring the entire system crashing down?
Pyramid Game debuted on WEBTOON on February 17, 2021, and concluded after 104 episodes on February 1, 2023. The series has racked up over 17.4 million views.
The story was also adapted into a live-action drama, which aired from February 29 to March 21, 2024. The 10-episode series is available to stream on Viu and Paramount+ in select regions. Directed by Park So-yeon, written by Choi Soo-i, and created by Lee Jae-kyoo, the show stars Kim Jiyeon as Seong Suji, Jang Da-ah as Baek Harin, Ryu Da-in as Myeong Jaeun, Shin Seul-ki as Seo Doah, and Kang Na-eon as Im Yerim. Jang Da-ah earned a nomination for Best New Actress at the Blue Dragon Series Awards for her role.
Pyramid Game is available to read on WEBTOON. The animated adaptation premieres on LAFTEL on June 14.
