Painter of the Night fans, you’ve waited a long time for the side stories, and while it’ll still be a bit before we see more of Nakyum and Seungho in the manhwa, you’ll get to watch them come to life in a drama in the (hopefully) near future.
According to Naver, Painter of the Night will receive a live-action adaptation. This short-form drama will feature episodes just two minutes long. While the original manhwa is an adult work filled with nudity and explicit scenes, the drama will target audiences aged 15 and up, with adjusted content and some episodes given a more mature rating.
Kidari Studio, Lezhin Entertainment, Doodoong, and Mongjakso will produce the live-action adaptation, with Choi Bokyung signed on to direct.
Created by Byeonduck, Painter of the Night debuted on the Lezhin English platform on June 12, 2019, and wrapped its fourth and final season on November 10, 2023, with 129 episodes. Byeonduck released a two-episode epilogue on May 24, 2024. During its run, the series quickly became one of Lezhin’s most popular titles, topping the platform’s charts for five consecutive years and winning “Best Webtoon” at the BL Awards two years in a row.
A talented painter named Baek Nakyum draws erotic paintings of men under a pseudonym. Although he’s quit painting in favor of the bottle, he gets pulled back into painting once more because of Yoon Seungho, a rich and powerful nobleman who has gained a reputation for his lust and penchant for sodomy. Despite Nakyum’s protests, he’s forced to become Seungho’s private artist where he’s required to paint all of Seungho’s nightly trysts. And though Nakyum keeps his eyes carefully trained on his paper and ink, raising his face only when necessary, he can’t help but feel as though Seungho has been staring more at him than at whichever man he’s with that night…
