This summer, K-Pop takes on a devilishly fun new twist. KPop Demon Hunters, the upcoming animated feature from Sony Pictures Animation (Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse), is set to hit Netflix on June 20, bringing with it a fierce blend of dazzling music, supernatural action, and girl-group power.
The film follows Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, members of a rising K-Pop girl group who are secretly demon hunters. When demonic forces—disguised as an evil K-Pop boy band—threaten the world (and their fans), the trio must rise to the occasion and slay in more ways than one.
Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, with a script co-written by Kang, Appelhans, Danya Jimenez, and Hannah McMechan, KPop Demon Hunters brings together a powerhouse voice cast. Arden Cho, May Hong, and Ji-young Yoo star as Rumi, Mira, and Zoey. Joining them are Ahn Hyoseop as one of the demon boy band members, and a stacked supporting cast that includes Yunjin Kim, Joel Kim Booster, Liza Koshy, Daniel Dae Kim, Ken Jeong (as Bobby), and Lee Byung-hun (as Gwi-Ma). Ahn was in the drama adaptation of Business Proposal, Dr. Romantic 2 and 4, and will portray Kim Dokja in Omniscient Reader.
A true love letter to the K-Pop world, the movie’s soundtrack features original songs performed by an all-star lineup including Jeongyeon, Jihyo, and Chaeyoung of TWICE, along with Lea Salonga, Audrey Nuna, REI AMI, Kevin Woo, and more. The music was penned and produced by heavy hitters like Danny Chung, KUSH, Jenna Andrews, Stephen Kirk, Teddy Park, and producers from THEBLACKLABEL, a YG Entertainment affiliate.
Director Maggie Kang called the collaboration a “dream come true,” especially working with members of TWICE. “It really legitimizes our film and songs in the K-Pop world,” she said. “It’s proof that we achieved what we set out to do, which is make a real K-Pop group.”
With a bold concept, fierce female leads, and a soundtrack dripping with K-Pop pedigree, KPop Demon Hunters is poised to dominate both the screen and the charts. KPop Demon Hunters will hit the Netflix stage on June 20.
