The hit K-Drama King the Land is making a comeback—with an American twist.
As reported by Variety, the series will receive a U.S. adaptation produced by global production company Third Culture Content (TCC). Details about the remake, including casting, staff, and potential localization changes, remain under wraps.
At the same time, TCC welcomed Crazy Rich Asians producer Janice Chua as the co-founder and producer who previously worked as the VP of international development and production at Imagine Entertainment. Chua “brings expertise and vision, as well as a deep understanding of cross-cultural storytelling and this will all be instrumental in driving TCC forward, as we continue to scale and serve our stakeholders and audiences with compelling, impactful content,” said Sean Dulake, the co-founder and CEO.
The original King the Land follows Gu Won, the heir and general manager of King Hotel, who becomes embroiled in an inheritance war. There, he meets Cheon Sarang, a hotelier known for her ever-present smile. The drama stars Lee Junho as Gu Won and Im Yoon-ah as Sarang. It originally aired from June 17 to August 6, 2023, spanning 16 episodes.
The series earned critical acclaim, winning multiple awards, including the Grand Prize at the APAN Star Awards. Lee Junho received the Actor of the Year award at the Asia Artist Awards, while Im Yoon-ah won the Top Excellence Actress Award at the Fundex Awards. The drama also dominated Netflix’s Global Top Ten list for Non-English series, staying in the rankings for eight consecutive weeks.
King the Land‘s popularity was perhaps already foreseen as a manhwa prequel was released on June 11, just six days before drama’s premiere. The manhwa received a print release, courtesy of Seven Seas.
For those eager to revisit the original, King the Land is available for streaming on Netflix.
