In a recent interview with Apple Music, BLACKPINK‘s Jennie shared the inspirations behind her highly-anticipated solo album, Ruby, and reflected on the profound impact her mother’s support has had on her career.

Jennie opened up about the creative process behind the album, revealing how it allowed her to reconnect with herself. “First of all, I was very shocked,” she said. “I didn’t realize how much I had been distant from myself throughout the years. The greatest part of this solo project for me was that I finally had time for myself, which was great. I really got to dig deep into who I am and what I am. All the self-reflecting moments led to the creation of this album—it was made by truly understanding myself better.”

She also discussed specific tracks, including “Starlight” and “Twin”. Describing “Starlight,” Jennie explained, “It’s me telling myself never to remember this self of myself.” Meanwhile, “Twin” holds a deeply personal meaning for her. She elaborated, “The song is a very, very special song for me and maybe the most personal song… There’s gotta be someone making everyone feel this way.”

Jennie also credited her mother for her unwavering support and global perspective. “My mom has always been a supporter of mine,” she shared. “From a young age, we traveled a lot. When I was nine, we were traveling around Australia and New Zealand. Just the fact that she wanted me to have an open eye for the world, not just in Korea is also very rare in the Korean culture.” She further expressed her gratitude for her mother, saying, “Every day, I’m so grateful that I had my mom with me the whole time.”

While reflecting on her solo journey, Jennie emphasized her enduring bond with BLACKPINK. “As long as the four of us love each other, I think there’s no reason for anyone to see us separately,” she stated. She also praised her groupmate Rosé, saying, “I know how sincere she was about every work that she has made.”
