TOKYOPOP‘s first danmei novel is set to release very soon—within the next three months, to be exact.
Originally announced on March 22, 2024, the novel is written by Taiwanese author Shi Wu, making it a rare addition to the official English danmei catalog, which has largely featured works from mainland Chinese authors. Since the initial announcement, details on its release had been scarce, but TOKYOPOP has now confirmed that The Wizard will debut in May 2025.
Written by Shi Wu, with cover illustration by Uri, The Wizard follows detective Liang Yuan Feng as he investigates the brutal overnight murder of twelve people. His case seems to wrap up quickly when 18-year-old Cheng Jin Xi steps forward and confesses to the crime, earning a life sentence in prison.
Seven years later, however, another murder occurs—and the special ops team sent to investigate vanishes without a trace. Desperate for answers, Liang Yuan Feng turns to the only person who may have a connection to the case: Cheng Jin Xi. Taking the young man into his custody, Liang Yuan Feng promises to “take care of him for the rest of his life”—but soon discovers that Cheng Jin Xi is hiding a shocking secret. He’s a wizard, burdened by powers he considers a curse. Now, the two must work together to unravel the truth behind the murders before more lives are lost.
This single-volume novel is recommended for readers 16 and up and will be published under TOKYOPOP’s LoveLove imprint, which focuses on boys’ love and girls’ love titles. The paperback edition is priced at $19.99 and contains 224 pages. Currently, The Wizard is the only danmei title in TOKYOPOP’s catalog, but if interest and demand grow, it could pave the way for more releases in the genre.
The Wizard releases on May 20, 2025.
