The live-action film adaptation of Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint, now titled Omniscient Reader, has given fans their first look at what’s to come.
The teaser opens with Kim Dokja (Ahn Hyoseop) reading a book on his phone and arriving at a line where it mentions the subway stopping in the middle of the Dongho Bridge. As if on cue, the subway he’s on suddenly screeches to a halt. Everything he read in his fantasy novel has come to life. And as the novel’s only reader, Kim Dokja is the only one who knows how the story will end.
Everything is thrown into chaos as the subway is tossed around, and the other main characters are introduced in rapid succession. First, Yoo Joonghyuk (Lee Minho) pulls Kim Dokja back from falling to his death using his tie and demands to know who he is. The trailer then quickly introduces Yoo Sangah (Chae Soobin), Lee Hyunsung (Shin Seungho), Jung Heewon (Nana), and Lee Jihye (BLACKPINK‘s Jisoo).
From this brief trailer, it’s clear that Omniscient Reader is taking a different approach from the original content, most notably with characters using guns, which has sparked criticism from many fans. In response, producer Won Dong-yun tweeted that he had shown the original authors the film’s scenario, and they had “understood everything.” Addressing the gun usage, he confirmed that Yoo Joonghyuk would use a combination of guns and swords, and while there would be changes in the adaptation, the overall theme and message would remain faithful to the original.
The film will be produced by Realies Pictures, with Kim Byun Woo directing. In a previous report from October 2020, it was revealed that Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint would receive five movie adaptations, five drama seasons, and several animation projects. An anime adaptation was also announced at Anime Expo 2024.
Based on the webnovel by singNsong and adapted into a webcomic by Sleepy C (REDICE Studio), Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint has become one of Korea’s most popular series. The story follows office worker Kim Dokja, who has been reading a webnovel titled Three Ways to Survive the Apocalypse for the past 10 years. When he reaches the novel’s conclusion, he receives a message from the author who sends him the novel—and minutes later, the story becomes reality. As the sole reader of TWSA, Kim Dokja possesses the knowledge to survive whatever challenges come his way—or does he?
Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint can be read on WEBTOON, with the print release of the webcomic and webnovel handled by Ize Press. The film is set to release in July 2025.
