Marvel and DC jump on the webtoon craze with some excellent comics

Webtoons are the new big thing - but how has the more traditional comics world responded?

-

As more comics fans are coming to the medium through webtoons than ever, it only makes sense that the biggest names in American comics are also getting into the now ubiquitous digital vertical scrolling format. There’s a webtoon for everyone, and now there are webtoons for superhero fans too…and beyond.

Here’s how Marvel, DC Comics, and Archie Comics have responded to the growing audience for vertical scrolling comics with their own webtoon-style comics and how (and where) you can read them.

Marvel Infinity

Marvel’s Infinity line consists of webtoon-style scrolling comics featuring plenty of recognizable Marvel superheroes (and some of their less recognizable pets). While some of these comics serve as introductions to classic and new Marvel characters (check out the “Who is…?” line), others tell brand new stories and are a whole lot of fun.

And if you’re looking for something absolutely adorable to read, you don’t need to look any further than It’s Jeff! by comics superstars Kelly Thompson and Gurihiru, which follows everyone’s favorite land shark on the cutest adventures imaginable (superhero cameos abound). It was even nominated for a prestigious Eisner Award for Best Digital Comic in 2022.

As for how to read these comics, you’ll need a Marvel Unlimited subscription, which costs $9.99 a month and comes with a whole backlog of other Marvel comics you can read digitally.

DC Comics x WEBTOON

DC Comics has collaborated with webtoon giant WEBTOON to create four original WEBTOON series featuring fan favorite characters. These series are the wildly popular Batman: Wayne Family Adventures, Vixen: NYC, Zatanna & the Ripper, and Red Hood: Outlaws. The fare includes everything from slice of life to more traditional superhero coming of age stories, so you should be able to find a title that fits your taste. Batman: Wayne Family Adventures by has also been nominated for the Eisner Awards for Best Digital Comic

Not only are these fun available to read for free on WEBTOON, you can also read them in print graphic novel format too (in case you’re trying to manage your screen time).

Archie Comics x WEBTOON

Webtoons aren’t just for the superheroes. For those who love adult coming of age stories, Archie Comics and WEBTOON’s Big Ethel Energy is a whole lot of fun with romance, facing awkward your past, and finding your place as an adult. From a creative team of Siobhan, Keryl Brown Ahmed, Maria Li, Cathy Le, and Kielamel Sibal, this series probably plays into the traditional romance webtoon genre more than any other series on this list. So, if that’s your bag, you can’t go wrong with this modern, fun take on the classic Archie universe.
