WEBTOON CANVAS is a wonderful side of the WEBTOON platform, allowing any creator to self publish their own webtoon of various quality, length, and style. Nerd and Jock is one of those self published stories on CANVAS which has achieved success with over 550,000 subscribers and earning over 4000 patrons who support the creator.
Beginning its publication on Christmas eve of 2017, Nerd and Jock is the brainchild of finnish comic creator Marko Raassina. He has also created 3 more series such as Grumpy, My Girlfriend is an Orc Warlord, and Mister Marko, all of which can be read for free on CANVAS.
Nerd and Jock consists of episodes between 3 to 10 panels on average with earlier episodes being self contained slice-of-life segments between the Nerd and the Jock as the two become close friends and get into various scenarios like helping Nerd at the gym by having the Jock be his spotter, to having a heart-to-heart while hiking through a forest.
It isn’t until after episode 45 does the writing of Nerd and Jock change from having self-contained stories each episode, to lean more towards a linear story with story arcs set up for the characters involved. This is noticeable starting with episode 46 as we are introduced to new characters and even love interests for the Nerd and Jock as the series goes on.
Marko’s art is what can be described as very cute with simple shapes and silhouettes to give each character a distinct appearance along with their simple beady eyes. Each character is easy to distinguish and are instantly recognizable from Nerd looking like a nerd with the oversized glasses and puffy brown hair, Olga with her pale skin, dark flowing black hair up to the ground with simple lines to imply hair frizz, Jock with very small legs but a large muscular torso and arms given depth with use of thin and bold line art with a simple backwards cap to complete the look.
As of writing, the webtoon is over 256 episodes long, but the length of each episode makes it a relatively simple read you can easily stop and pick up from again at any time. Go read Nerd and Jock! It’s very cute, fun, and an enjoyable read to brighten up your day.
